It was in 1986, when author and illustrator Jane Hissey released Old Bear, the first of many heart warming tales featuring Old Bear and his friends, who rescued him from the attic and brought him back down in to the playroom. There have been over 20 picture books since, each one taking Jane Hissey up to a year to illustrate and also a BAFTA award winning television series Old Bear Stories.

Old Bear's Bedtime Stories is such a beautiful illustrated, picture book treasury. There are 21 adorable short stories within featuring many of the beloved characters from the Old Bear series and a host of other soft toy friends. I remember watching Old Bear and his friends on tv and this book brings back so many memories. If familiar with Jane Hissey's style, then you're aware of her beautiful coloured pencil illustrations, her pictures are just stunning and so detailed that you can imagine the textures and softness of the teddies.

 

With a charming collection of stories, Old Bear's Bedtime Stories has an Autumn/Winter theme, an example of titles include The Winter Picnic, Peter and the Pumpkin Bear, The Warm Snowman and The Three Bears, these reassuring stories are perfect for bedtime reading especially when all wrapped up in bed on a cold winter's night. These stories fill me with such warmth, I can't wait to read them to Aoife when she's a little older. Aimed at ages 3+, this book would make a lovely addition to any bookshelf.
